The starry It’s Only a Play, capitalized at $3.9 million, has recouped its investment at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The Terrence McNally comedy marks the first show of the 2014-15 season to make its money back. The production currently features Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing, Rupert Grint, F. Murray Abraham and Micah Stock.
It's Only a Play, directed by Jack O’Brien, is set on the opening night of Broderick's character Peter Austin's new play as he anxiously awaits to see if his show is a hit. With his career on the line, he shares his big first night with his best friend, a television star (Lane), his fledgling producer (Mullally), his erratic leading lady (Channing), his wunderkind director (Grint), an infamous drama critic (Abraham), and a wide-eyed coat check attendant (Stock) on his first night in Manhattan.
Tony winners Martin Short and Katie Finneran and 30 Rock alum Maulik Pancholy will step into the show beginning January 7, 2015, replacing Lane, Mullally and Grint, respectively. The production will move next door to the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre beginning January 18 and run through March 29.
